Vietnam Human Rights Network strongly protests Singapore's trafficking of Vietnamese women

The VNHRN has sent protest letters to the Prime Minister of Singapore, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Department of State, the Government of Vietnam, and international NGOs, condemning a Singaporean company for shamefully exploiting Vietnamese women. The following is the letter to Life Partner Matchmaker Pte Ltd, the company in question. The other letters of protest could be found by clicking on this link.

Dear Sirs:

Your advertisement on the internet of an “exciting Vietnam Matchmaking & Marriage Tour involving 1,000 “certified” Vietnamese brides in Vietnam” boasts that you are the number one “Cupid” agency in Singapore specializing in virgin Vietnamese brides.  The ad also displays a slide show of 87 new arrivals as of December 9, 2005, and mentions that you also provide online dating for activities, friendship, love, romance and marriage.  In fact, you are engaging in the trafficking of young women.  Your “services” are inhuman and denigrating to all women.

Singapore is known as one of the cleanest countries on the globe, famous for its honesty and its intolerance of corruption.  And it has served as  a role model in the areas of law and public administration.  Therefore, as a group of human rights activists, we cannot understand why your government has not prosecuted an organization that, since you incorporated with Eva Management in 1996, is involved in buying and selling innocent Vietnamese girls.

We strongly protest this barbaric form of modern-day slavery, and demand that you stop your exploitation and abuse of these Vietnamese victims.  An international campaign has been started by the Vietnam Human Rights Network to ask people to sign petitions to put an end to this brutal practice.  Protest letters are being sent to the Governments of Singapore and Vietnam, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, the U. S. Congress, the U.S. Department of State, and international NGOs.

Sincerely,

Jackie Bong-Wright                                                      .

Commissioner for Women’s Affairs
