Arrest of Human Rights Lawyer Le Cong Dinh

Vietnam Human Rights Network is deeply concerned by the arrest of Le Cong Dinh, a human rights lawyer, by Vietnamese authorities on June 13, 2009 on charge of “distributing propaganda against the state”. He was arrested because of his defense of  well-known pro-democracy activists such as Lawyers Nguyen Van Dai and Le Thi Cong Nhan in May 2007, and Blogger Dieu Cay in September 2008.

 

Lawyer Le Cong Dinh’s arrest comes within a month after the detention of Lawyer Le Tran Luat, a prominent defender for Thai Ha parishioners before the Court of Appeal in Hanoi, is merely an act of retaliation from the Government of Vietnam against the defenders of justice and human rights. It is also a warning shot to deter Vietnamese people from further quest for their freedom and democracy.

 

Vietnam Human Rights Network strongly condemns this grave human rights violation and would like to:

 

1. Demand the Government of Vietnam to immediately set free Lawyer Le Cong Dinh, as well as all other prisoners in detention for peaceful expressing their views;

 

2. Call on all freedom-loving countries to use their influences to pressure Vietnam

to respect human rights and to release immediately and unconditionally Lawyer

Le Cong Dinh and all other prisoners of conscience;

 

3. Call on members of the legal profession around the world to show their solidarity

to Lawyer Le Cong Dinh and other human rights lawyers under arrest in Vietnam.
