RWCHR Calls on Canada to Impose Sanctions on Vietnamese Human Rights Violators

Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights|  02 October 2024

Today, as Co-Chair of the Global Magnitsky Sanctions Coalition, and in collaboration with BPSOS, a U.S. based human rights organisation, we filed a comprehensive sanctions recommendation to Global Affairs Canada, urging the government to take action against sixteen Vietnamese individuals implicated in gross human rights violations.

The Communist Party of Vietnam, at the behest of its leaders, has perpetrated serious abuses against journalists, bloggers, pro-democracy and environmental activists, land rights defenders, ethnic and religious minorities, indigenous groups, and asylum-seekers

Our submission highlights severe violations, including arbitrary killings and detentions, transnational repression, torture, and the suppression of fundamental freedoms.

We call on the Canadian government to impose sanctions on the listed perpetrators, not only to advance its national interests and values, but also to protect the rules-based international order, promote internationally recognised human rights, and defend Vietnamese individuals who are persecuted for exercising fundamental freedoms and liberties

Canada must act swiftly and stand in solidarity with those in Vietnam who courageously defend their rights against authoritarian repression.
